To Jean Marie on the Jubilee of the 60th year of your Priesthood PDF Print E-mail

from Ray Turner, NEC Representative, Liverpool

jeanmarie.jpgCan I take you back to the summer of 1976 when inflation was running at nearly 20% and companies were closing at the rate of two a week. Unemployment was touching 15% and the trades unions were at the peak of their power, or at least that is what the government at the time told us! Imagine the scene in a tiny dingy smoke filled room in a large factory in Liverpool. The room is used at the concession of management by the shop stewards’ committee and there is a heated discussion going on about what action should be taken to avoid a complete walk out of 2,000 production workers in a dispute over 5 men not being paid the correct bonus. In the midst of all this mayhem in walks a little bloke in a long mac and beret accompanied by another member of the committee.

Reclaiming Time PDF Print E-mail

reclaimingtime.jpgThe MCW is calling for a campaign to reclaim control over our time and is set against the backdrop of socio-economic, political and policy changes over recent decades, which have sought to advance ‘flexibility' as a necessity for a dynamic and free market as well as a creator of jobs. However the cost of ‘flexibility' in the labour market is that more and more of us have to work "all the hours God sends".

The MCW has identified workers experiencing long and intense hours of work within their employment. Within this intensification of work comes the need for services to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The UK is noted for its greater variety of work-time arrangements in comparison with most other EU countries.

Stand with the Burmese Protesters PDF Print E-mail

supportburmese.jpgHi, you have heard about the crisis in Burma. Burma is ruled by one of the worst military dictatorships in the world. This week Buddhist monks and nuns began marching and chanting prayers to call for democracy. The protests spread and hundreds of thousands of Burmese people joined in -- they've been brutally attacked by the Military regime, but still the protests are spreading.

I just signed a petition calling on Burma's powerful ally China and the UN Security Council to step in and pressure Burma's rulers to stop the Killing. The petition has exploded to over 200,000 signatures in a few days and is being advertised in newspapers around the world, delivered yo the UN secretary general, and broadcast to the Burmese people by radio. We're trying to get to 1 million signatures this week, please sign below and tell everyone!

White Paper on Social Security in Europe PDF Print E-mail

whitepaper-frontpage-small.jpgFor a Social Europe, with Equity and Solidarity

The European Movements (ECWM) of the World Movement of Christian Workers has issued a white paper on social security, it argues that: “Social Security can be financed when there is a Respect for Solidarity”. The ECWM was invited to present the white paper to the Social Committee of the European Parliament, resulting in a dialogue between politicians and the movement. The ECWM also presented the white paper to COMECE, The Commission of European Bishops’ Conferences. The movement advocates dialogue between the official church and workers to achieve social justice as laid out in Church Social teachings.

“Social security in Europe is a right for everyone and can be financed as long as: - The pillars of solidarity within the social security systems are consolidated - Expenses are controlled in a fair manner - The expenses are distributed and borne in solidarity and with fairness. - We advocate quality social security through increased solidarity”.  You can download it here.
